Start with validation, cuff fit and a routine you can repeat.

The American Heart Association recommends an automatic upper-arm monitor. Check that the particular model has been validated, including for the intended user group. Measure your arm and compare it with the stated cuff range before buying.

Consider whether the display is readable, the cuff is manageable and readings can be recorded for your clinician. Bring the monitor to an appointment to check your technique. Home monitoring complements professional care; do not change medication on the basis of a device reading alone.
