Is intravenous infusion helpful for a severe cough?

Intravenous infusion usually refers to intravenous injection therapy. For severe coughs, intravenous injection is often effective, but the appropriate medication should be selected based on the underlying cause. Common causes include influenza, acute bronchitis, and bacterial pneumonia.

1. Influenza: It is an upper respiratory tract infection caused by the influenza virus. This disease mainly involves the upper respiratory tract and presents with various symptoms such as fever, sore throat, dry cough, general muscle aches, or headache. Most cases are self-limiting and resolve within 1-2 weeks. If the cough is severe and does not improve with oral medication, intravenous antiviral and cough suppressant medications may be considered, such as ribavirin injection, cyclophosphamide injection, cyclophosphamide injection, and ambroxol hydrochloride injection.

2. Acute bronchitis: This refers to acute inflammation of the trachea, bronchial mucosa, and surrounding tissues, mainly secondary to upper respiratory tract infections. Common symptoms include cough, sputum, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and chest pain. If the cough is more severe and not relieved by oral medication, intravenous antibiotics, bronchodilators, and asthma medications may be considered, such as cefoperazone sodium injection, cefuroxime sodium injection, aminophylline injection, and doxophylline glucose injection.

3. Bacterial pneumonia: This is an inflammatory disease of the terminal airways, alveoli, and interstitial lung caused by bacterial infection. The main symptoms after onset are fever, cough, sputum production, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing. Antibiotics can be used to treat symptoms via intravenous infusion, such as ceftriaxone sodium injection and cefotaxime sodium injection.

In addition to the three common factors mentioned above, it may also be related to tuberculosis, bronchial asthma, and other conditions. Different types of respiratory diseases require different treatment plans and medications. Blindly administering intravenous medication is not recommended; a thorough examination should be conducted first, and appropriate treatment measures should be chosen based on the doctor's advice. During treatment, bed rest is important, and spicy, irritating, and high-sugar foods should be avoided.
